Education - Childs play!!

Came across this article. Came as a rude shock to me! IIT coaching from class VII? They must be joking. Education has been increasing the pressure on children, (and parents, ofcourse!) but this one, undoubtedly takes the cake. Parents now a days expect a lot from their children and want them to become all-that-they-could-not-become. IIT ofcourse has a prestige and it does make a life-changing-impact on its students, but then, people have been joining IIT for all these years with about two years of coaching. But parents now want more(!) and are rightly answered by these kind of institutions. Its all premium now and the rate of increase in the number of premium schools (read fees above 40K per year and the need to book your seat the moment you realize you are pregnant) is faster than the rate of increase in Indian population. Imagine a school with a fees of 40K in a small town called Aarani in tamil nadu. Parents are only too much willing to admit their children to such schools. But then, the institution think-tanks should be given their due credit, for who else can coin creative terms like "competitive psychology and scientific temperament". Now you know that you can trust them for sure with your childs education.

God save our children. Let them have their childhood!

@Thiyagu, Hope you stand away from this crowd and set an example ;).

One point which I am not able to get is, why parents want their child to do the things which they were not able to achieve. Why shouldn't the child have his own aspirations. Children in this era are able to select a career interest even while they are in the high school. It would be gr8 if they are guided in such a manner that they are able to reach it successfully.

True its not the same as it was before 10-15 years.

Today at least in TN most of parents realize that they can not force their kids to live their (parents) dreams.

In my view the primary goal for the parents is to provide an environment where children get good education and develop their strengths.

How many of us so called educated parents (to be parents) are ready to send our kids to a govt run school ?? The ground reality is that today in India or elsewhere the education you possess is the basic criteria when it comes to filtering (after all we have not found any better to filter) and knock at the doors you wish to get in.

In my view its going to take long long years from now to see a social change which will accept the strength of person with out his education.

To re-frame this sentence:

Parents, by pressurizing both children and education, lead us to deprivation of intellectual abilities.

Today, in India, only few would be willing to take up a career which is neither engineering nor medicine. Majority don't. This is not because they like it. But their parents do. We always are proud of Indian brains, which, if we look carefully, are grinding the same flour almost always. Our brains are good only at developing, not inventing.

If not channelized properly,
Education is certain to ruin innovation and creativity.

Well said Thiyagu! I certainly believe kids these days are too smart and have good decision making capabilities at very young age, which we lacked in our childhood.I am sure coaching classes are torturing the kids and make them deprived of the childhood pleasures!!!!!!
